Abstract Painting
Piece #1

Composed by Kevin Poelking

  • ca. 3-5 minutes

  • Grade 3-4

  • Lighter music
    • "Singable" melodies/ solo(s) combined with textures and rhythms with minimalist influences

  • Composed and orchestrated with the goal of sounding strong on the first read-through for those with tight rehearsal schedules (and will commit more rehearsal time to Piece #2) but with enough musical substance to fill longer rehearsal schedules

Piece #2

Composed by James M. David

  • 7-10 minutes
  • Grade 4.5/5
  • Instrumentation Notes:
Will NOT include second oboe, English horn, contrabassoon, or harp.
Any double reed solos will be cued as needed.
Standard instrumentation for wind ensemble/symphonic band.
String bass and contrabass clarinet parts included but optional.

  • Working Title: "Electric Dawn"
Exciting, colorful and dynamic, Electric Dawn will depict a retro-futuristic cityscape of the "tomorrow that never was" inspired by great science fiction writers of the 20th century.
Featuring winds, brass and percussion equally, this piece should serve well as either a dramatic opener or closer. With an overall energetic tone, a contrasting lyrical section, and a hopefully thrilling finale, the work aspires to be the centerpiece of an audience friendly program.

Consortium Details

While anyone can join, these works will both be written with the unique characteristics of youth community bands in mind.

Most notably, the music will be musically mature without extreme technical demands, filling the need for music at this difficulty level for patient, experienced musicians

Instrumentation will be standard concert band with appropriate cues written in order facilitate successful performances by community bands with instrumentation challenges

  • Both pieces orchestrated with the goal of sounding strong on the first read-through with enough musical substance to fill longer rehearsal schedules

A consortium is when a group of people join together to support a new music project. This piece is being written RIGHT NOW! Consortium members are the first group that can perform the new work and can take pride in the fact that this piece of music would not exist without their contribution!\

Conductor Option: $100 for both

What you receive:
  • Your name will appear in the sheet music as a consortium member who made this project possible

  • Score and parts delivered January 31, 2025
