Why I Wrote This Piece
Created through Music4More for El Sistema Colorado to bring beginning and advanced students together in a shared musical experience.
Program Note
Ignite begins with a quiet intensity in a shadowed, smoldering place where the rumble of cellos suggests the ember of an idea. From there, the spark spreads gradually through the ensemble until, suddenly, it ignites fully and the music bursts into a relentless energy that reveals both power and beauty.
This music is part of my Music4More inititiative and was written for the students of El Sistema Colorado. Their love for music, performing energy, and wonderfully creative musical ideas helped shape its direction. This process involved visiting the students in their rehearsal space in Denver, gathering written suggestions from them, and collaborating with the El Sistema staff to create a work that would be both meaningful and educational for the ensemble.
The music celebrates that first spark of curiosity when a student discovers their instrument, and how that ember can grow into something bright, powerful, and lasting.
Perfomance Notes
This piece is written for mixed-ability ensembles and can be performed as long as each paired line has at least one player (e.g., Violin Ia or Ib; Cello I or II, etc.). Each pair contains the same musical material—the “a” part written at Grade 2.5–3, and the “b” part at Grade 1.5–2—so it is completely acceptable if only one level is covered in any section.
The flexible scoring makes this piece ideal for large combined ensembles or cluster concerts where students of different ages and experience levels perform together.
