Program Notes
Emerging American composer Kevin Poelking has a growing and diverse portfolio of works performed in the United States and Europe, but his newest work, There and Back, for bassoon and piano, represents his first endeavor into the world of double reeds.
The work is in a large-scale ABA form: the A section is comprised of a series of miniature episodes, vibrant in nature; the B section is flowing and lyrical, providing artistic contrast to A. With the return of the A theme, the episodes are presented in reverse order, creating a skillfully crafted palindromic rondo, complete with a subtle reference to a major 21st century musical force.

There and Back was composed for Laura Bennett Cameron (principal bassoon of the Dallas Winds) and accepted at the 2020 International Double Reed Society International Conference.
