WHY I COMPOSE
I believe in the intangible power of music, the community it creates, and the idea that it can transcend the concert halls and change lives.
I believe that music deserves to be crafted with care, patience, and respect. Every piece I write is meant to honor the musicians who bring it to life, the audiences who give it their attention, and the communities that gather around it.
HOW I GOT HERE
While I’ve always been a composer, my path to full-time composition brought me opportunities to experience music from many perspectives.
With almost fifteen years in music education, I taught everyone from beginning fourth graders to university students. I performed as a percussionist, conducted chamber ensembles, bands, orchestras, and opera, and spent countless hours alongside musicians of all ages and backgrounds.
Today, every piece I write is shaped by those experiences and by the performers, educators, conductors, and audiences who continue to inspire me.
HOW I CREATE NEW MUSIC
I believe the best new music comes from listening first: understanding the needs of performers, conductors, educators, and audiences, and creating music that fills gaps in the repertoire or offers a new perspective.
This philosophy has led to initiatives such as the Purposeful Repertoire Collection, The Chamber Winds Project, and many collaborative commissions, all rooted in the belief that music should serve the musicians that bring it to life.
GIVING BACK
While music itself can create meaningful change, I knew from the very beginning that I wanted to build a composing career with doing good built into its DNA.
At first, that meant simple acts: monetary donations, pro-bono work, and discounts for students and schools in need. As my career grew, so did my ability to give back.
In 2025, I formalized part of that commitment through Music4More, an initiative dedicated to expanding access to music, supporting causes that matter, and creating opportunities for young musicians.

Poelking's music has received national and international recognition in orchestral, wind, and chamber literature, with honors including Winner of The American Prize with two additional National top-three finishes, Winner of the WASBE International Composition Competition along with competition wins and finalist distinctions at major organizations and festivals (see below). Across genres, his work reflects a balance of musical depth, performer empathy, and strong audience connection.

Recent highlights and upcoming performances including recordings of Poelking’s music by ensembles and musicians across North America, Europe, and beyond, with his work now performed on six continents. Notable performers include The Dallas Winds, The U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own", The U.S. Naval Academy Band and recordings with ensembles such as the Budapest Scoring Orchestra, Bratislava Symphony Orchestra, and Zagreb Sinfonietta, as well as the large-scale wind ensemble project Sounds, Voices, and Dreams from Ukraine, which premiered in Kyiv with the National Academic Symphonic Band of Ukraine.
Through projects like this and his ongoing Music4More initiative, Poelking’s work often connects new music with social impact, educational access, and community partnership.

Poelking arrived at full-time composition through years of experience as an educator, performer, and conductor. Though composition had always been part of his musical life, it was only later that he recognized it as a professional path, a shift that quickly led to national and international recognition.
Almost entirely self-taught as a composer before later studying with James M. David and Carter Pann, he developed much of his musical voice independently, drawing influence from a wide range of genres and composers rather than from any single school or lineage. That path, combined with years spent in rehearsal rooms as a conductor, performer, and teacher, continues to shape music that is emotionally impactful, carefully crafted, and deeply aware of ensemble realities.

In addition to composing, Poelking is an active conductor and collaborator. He has conducted wind, chamber, and orchestral ensembles including The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and previously served on the music faculty at Colorado State University, where he taught conducting and theory, directed the concert band and was nominated for an Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award. He now works full-time as a composer, regularly collaborating with ensembles, musicians, and organizations worldwide.
Poelking has degrees in music from the University of South Carolina (2007-2011) and Colorado State University (2017-2019). He lives in Fort Collins, Colorado with his wife Caitlin and their dog Koopa.
